Macmillan Charity Fete

06/01/2015

On Thursday 28th May the staff at Be Wiser hosted a charity fete day in aid of our charity partner for 2015 Macmillan Cancer Support.

All the Be Wiser departments got involved with their own fun and exciting ways to raise money. The day was a huge success and together we raised £1,442.30 for a brilliant cause.

The Be Wiser Business Insurance team kick started the fundraising on the previous evening by organising an interdepartmental charity football tournament. There were a few tired looking legs in the morning of the fete, however the charity tournament was a great success, with the Commercial department taking home the trophy.

Highlights of the Day

The charity fete day began early on the Thursday, with submissions for the “Great Be Wiser Bake Off” being delivered to the Owl’s Nest for judging.

There were four individual categories to be judged including cakes, biscuits, savouries and scones, as well as the highly coveted “Showstopper” prize for the overall winner.

The Training department set up a photo booth next to the cake display, where people could go and have wacky pictures taken with their colleagues. Here's a selection of our favourites:

Our Audit and Customer Care departments teamed up to run a tombola, with an impressive 1 in 5 chance to win a variety of goodies, including bottles, sweets, chocolate and other treats.

The Technical Underwriting department transformed their corridor into a runway for the day as part of their "FlyWiser" competition. Contestants were given a single piece of paper and challenged to construct an aeroplane, which they would then have to land on the target to win a bundle of prizes.

The Renewals department had a mini fete of their own, with a range of try-your-luck stalls, including hook-a-duck, roll-a-penny, a putting competition and their bean bag target challenge.

The department has a reputation for coming up with their own innovative games and certainly did not disappoint us this time with the ingenious “lemon in a bucket” and “ping pong pringles” challenges.

Customer support also had games in department including foot-golf and play your cards right.

The winners of the Great Be Wiser Bake Off were announced shortly before lunch time, with the

Owl’s Nest’s very own Sally Ganley scooping the Showstopper prize with this impressive entry:

After the bake-off winners were announced, the Customer Support department hosted a bake sale where a selection of the winning entries were sold off.

The Personnel team helped to sell the various bakes by taking them aound the business, together with their huge jar of sweets which they challenged people to guess the weight of and win.

The Call Wiser team challenged us to challenge them with a ‘Push Ups for Charity Challenge’ where they would perform 10 push ups for £1. Needless to say this challenge gained a lot of support from the other sales teams who enjoyed pushing their colleagues to the limit and raised a lot of money for Macmillan in the process.

The Admin team challenged us to match them to their baby photo, while the Business Solutions department ran a selfie competition for the chance to be a Movie Star for the Day in their upcoming promotional video. Our favourite was this one from Nigel in Insurer Relations:

For those that are unaware, Macmillan is a fantastic charity that provides invaluable support those diagnosed with cancer and their families, by providing information, energy and inspiration.

There are over 2 million people in the UK currently living with cancer and this is expected to rise to 4 million by 2030. Macmillan Cancer Support wants to ensure every one of those people has the support they need and that no one has to face cancer alone.
