Be Wiser 'HeadStart' Apprentice gets the results he was hoping for - live on national television!

Having sat his GCSE exams earlier this summer, Be Wiser apprentice Tom Underwood was recently accepted onto the two-year HeadStart talent development programme, on the condition that he reached the entry criteria of 5 GCSE’s at grade C - including Maths and English.

Bravely, Tom accepted an exciting opportunity to open his results live on ITV’s This Morning programme, hosted by husband and wife presenting duo Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

Needless to say he seized the opportunity with both hands and was rewarded for his bravery with the fantastic news that he had achieved 2 B’s and 6 C’s, in front of a live television audience of over 2 million people!

Accompanying Tom on the show by his father Anthony, who was extremely proud to see him get the grades he was hoping for.

They were joined on the sofa by founder & CEO of Exam Confidence, Richard Riddell, who was offering advice to other candidates who had received their results that morning.

In an article published by Andover Advertiser, Tom explained how he felt when he was told about the opportunity to be on television:

“This seemed like too good an opportunity to miss!” he said.

“Whether or not I was opening my results on TV or in front of my family, I would have to open them at some point and this sounded like fun.”

Be Wiser’s HeadStart apprenticeship programme has been specifically designed with school leavers in mind and offers a practical alternative to college, providing candidates with a ‘head start’ into a professional career within the financial services industry.

As well as gaining valuable paid working experience within one of the UK’s fastest growing insurance brokers, HeadStart apprentices are offered support to achieve highly employable, industry-recognised qualifications, in addition to completing a nationally recognised NVQ.

Programme Manager, Mark Leeming said: “The HeadStart programme provides a fantastic opportunity for school leavers to earn-while-they-learn.”

“Our apprentices gain valuable technical knowledge of the insurance industry, as well as developing an important set of professional skills early on in their careers - all while earning a competitive salary.”

“The A-Level and University route is not for everybody and with an increasing number of graduates ending up in non-graduate positions, apprenticeships are providing a brilliant alternative for many enthusiastic young people across the country.”

Be Wiser’s apprenticeship programmes have gained national recognition and last year Be Wiser was ranked amongst the top 100 apprenticeship  employers in the country. Be Wiser was also appointed apprenticeships ambassador for the South of England.

In the event that Tom had not met the grades required for HeadStart, Be Wiser also runs its FreshStart apprenticeship scheme, which recognises the needs of its applicants to learn at a pace that is more suited their ability.

Similar to HeadStart, FreshStart is a two year programme where apprentices work towards an industry-recognised qualification from the Chartered Insurance Institute.
