A Great Night for Be Wiser at the British Insurance Awards

It was at late notice that I was given the opportunity to attend the British Insurance Awards 2015. I was about to leave work for the day, when Kieran (my manager), rushed over to me with the invitation. He explained that the event was on the following evening and that the dress code was black tie. I'd never been to a black tie event before, so there was a frantic search when I got home to get a suit and tie together.

When the time came the next day, Cres and I put on our suits and took the long taxi journey up to the Royal Albert Hall in London. The traffic wasn't the best and we were anxious that planned tube strikes on the day could delay our arrival, but fortunately we managed to arrive on time.

The taxi dropped us off at the entrance, where there were a number of other smartly dressed attendees making their way into the venue. We were greeted warmly by the staff at the venue, who showed us to our private box, where we proceeded to set up camp for the evening. The view from the balcony was amazing! It looked over all the tables, which were illuminated with various colours and the stage was dazzling.

The tables soon began to fill up with guests and within no time the introduction was underway. The evening was hosted by Jonathan Swift, director of content at Post Magazine, who explained what to expect from the evening.

Cres and I were taken to a restaurant where we enjoyed a three course meal including rare beef slices; roast duck and asparagus and a raspberry and chocolate pudding for dessert, which we polished off with ease.

The awards started with guest host Al Murray’s trademark pub landlord comedy act which brought laughter around the arena. There where twenty-five awards as of which Be Wiser where nominated for three. Gosport Choir provided backing singing, which helped to create an exciting atmosphere and we were also kept entertained by a number of great music acts such as Heatwave, an Abba tribute act.

Be Wiser was nominated for three awards and the first one to be announced was the ‘Investing in the Profession Award’. Cres and I were on the edge of our seats as they announced the winner – “Be Wiser Insurance!”

We began our long run to the stage to collect the award in front of the huge audience, who were applauding our success. After collecting the award, we were taken backstage for an interview. We were asked about what it means to the company to win the award and how we felt about it.

Several other awards were presented before the ‘Outsourced Partner of the Year’ Award was announced, which Wiser Academy had been nominated for.

There was great cause for celebration when the host announced that we had won the award, which was the company’s second of the night. This time Cres went up to collect the award, while I watched from the balcony.

After the second award, we began contemplating the feeling that winning our third category would bring, the ‘UK Broker of the Year Award’. Unfortunately however, we had to settle for the two awards, as Jelf Insurance were announced as winners, but still an excellent result for Be Wiser!

As the awards finished it was time to say our goodbyes to the people we met and we put our two well deserved awards into their boxes before leaving. It was a fantastic evening and witnessing the company I work for winning these awards at such a prestigious event, makes me 'proud to Be Wiser’.
